As the season of Advent begins, we change our focus to the traditions and festivals of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The world today uses the word ‘consumer’ to refer to those who shop and purchase the goods and services offered by merchants. Obviously, we are all consumers as we depend upon the products in stores for our health and well-being.
The key to the holiday season is to be faithful to who we are as Christians in the context of our ministry. Many people will come to church for their annual (or semi annual) worship experience and will hear the Word of God. However, we are reminded to not only ‘speak’ the Word of God, but also to put those words into action with genuine love and compassion for each other.
Our ministry must include actions that identify who we are to the stranger as well as our friends and neighbors. When our actions reflect the love of God for all people, we help those who are ‘consumed’ by the holidays. When we reveal the true character of a Christian, we offer an alternative path through Jesus Christ that is abundant in life, rich in blessings, filled with grace, shining with mercy, and steadfast in abounding love. May the light of Christ shine brightly in your lives for all to see this Christmas Season… and every season yet to come. In Christ our Lord, Pastor Tony.
